Hobsons Community - Beer
Producing delicious award winning beer is what we love to do, it's why Hobsons was created and its what drives Henry's team. We only use the finest locally sourced ingredients when producing our beer and this practice has helped set the flavour of Hobsons apart from the competition. It has also played a key part in the recognition we have gained in the form of awards like CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain 2007 for our Mild and CAMRA West Midlands Strong Bitter 2009 for Old Henry. We are extremely proud of our range of beers which offers something for every palate. Whether you're an avid real ale fan or a potential lager or cider convert we're sure to have a Hobsons to suit you.
We are members of two real ale organisations, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) Please find links to there websites below.
www.camra.org.uk - CAMRA are an independent, voluntary organisation with over 100,000 members. They have been described as the most successful consumer group in Europe. CAMRA promotes good quality real ale and pubs, as well as acting as the consumer's champion in relation to the UK and European beer and drinks industry.
www.siba.co.uk - SIBA was formed in 1980 to represent the emerging wave of microbreweries. With growing credibility and campaign success they have come to represent the broad spectrum of the independent brewing sector.

We would like to say a big congratulations to the Nag’s head and Bartons arms who have been named as two of the countries best pubs in the Guardian newspaper. In a feature called ’10 of the best’ Guardian journalist Anne Tims selected the Nag’s head in Worcestershire and the Bartons Arms in Birmingham as two of Britain’s top 10 pubs. Anne said of the Nag’s Head ‘It is the beers that seduce – 16 of them on tap’ and when commenting on the Bartons Arms Anne said ‘ Saved from dereliction in 2002 it now offers the best range of bottled beers in the city, a menu of host and guest beers and a complement of Thai chefs’.
Hobsons have been supplying both pubs for some time now and each has their favourite brew. The Bartons Arms is a fan of Hobsons Mild while the Nag’s Head favours Hobsons Best. However other familiar Hobsons names can be found on the menu from time to time including Town Crier and Twisted Spire. Nick Davis head brewer at Hobsons said “We are delighted that these two fantastic pubs have been recognised on a national level for the excellent service, atmosphere and beer they provide and we wish them all the best for the future”.

Until recently, if you weren’t lucky enough to live within our ‘cask in 50′ delivery area, rarely could you enjoy the fruits of Henry’s team but a growing awards cabinet is helping to spread the Hobsons message beyond the county borders – in a light weight bottle. More and more ‘purveyors of quality’ up and down the country who share a passion for great natural produce are choosing to sell our award winning bottled beers. In fact our bottle sales have increased by an impressive 46% since we launched our new labels back in the Spring of 2009.
With new stockists taking on our innovative bottles almost everyday it seems our delicious beer is reaching many more of you out there than was previously possible. Its impossible to say whether this is totally due to our fresh new look but with compliments flying in from retailers and consumers a like we think its pretty safe to assume the new packaging has been well received. Why don’t you let us know what you think of our new labels and of course our beer by leaving us a comment.

The stunning Georgian exterior of The White Lion Hotel, Upton-Upon-Severn hides it’s true age. However, enter the brasserie and the old timber beams are still exposed hinting to the hotels real age of 500 years. The hotel has enjoyed a rich history with dandy highway men, romps in the bedroom with Tom Jones (the fictional hero not the singer) and sheep driven straight through the building on their way to market, not to mention the part it played in ending the Civil War. According to the history books royalist troops under the command of Prince Rupert “partook in drinking strong waters at the inn known as The Lion” allowing Cromwell’s men to cross the river. Days later the war ended and the rest as they say is history.
To mark the occasion Jon and Chris Lear, owners of The White Lion asked us to create an exclusive brew for the half a millennia anniversary. The outcome is Owd Lion & Pepperpot a rich auburn ale of 5.2%, not to dissimilar to the beer Cromwell’s men would have enjoyed all those years ago. Why not pay them a visit and soak up the history in their cozy bar whilst enjoying a pint or two. Alternatively you can buy a bottle of Owd Lion & Pepperpot with 50p going to the Midlands Air Ambulance until the end of February.
The White Lion Hotel can be found on Upton upon Severn Hight Street, Worcester, WR8 oHJ. You can find out more about the hotel, its special brew and planned celebrations to mark the 500 year anniversary by visiting their website www.whitelionhotel.biz.

With the colder months coming in, the fruity warmth of Old Henry has been a three county tradition for real cockle warming for some years. Now the secret’s out and Old Henry, our venerable porter and tribute to the spirit of the Guv’nor, has scooped yet another award for its full-mouthed flavour. At 5.2% this is no lightweight and it really does ‘drink its weight’, but for a dark cold night there’s nothing like it; a cold night, a brisk walk to the pub, Old Henry by an open fire – it’s a great way to reflect on the state of true contentment.
