We are fortunate to have a growing syndicate of local farmers growing Maris Otter Malting Barley.

In 2010 Hobsons embarked on an initiative to source locally grown Maris Otter malting barley, a variety recognised in the industry as being the best malting barley available to produce high quality beers with great taste. A small producers group was set up with the objective to establish a sustainable supply chain of locally grown malting barley. In collaboration with local land agent John Amos & Co, grain merchant Robin Appel and Fawcetts the maltsters, a series of open days were organised to encourage local farmers to come along and learn about the opportunities to grow Maris Otter.

In 2011, 350 acres of Maris Otter Barley was planted as part of our initiative to develop locally grown Barley, this year 900 acres has been planted. This is the fifth year of a very strong group of growers, merchants, maltsters and now additional Shropshire Brewers.

Maris Otters 50th Anniversary

50 years on and going strong! An incredible story really stretching back over 50 years when the Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) based in Cambridge were charged with breeding a barley full of flavour and easy to process for brewers. Maris Otter now rightly commands it’s position in global brewing circles as the ‘Grand cru’ of malting barley. As the great beer renaissance gathers pace the demand for Maris Otter malt around the world increases. It is only grown in mainland UK by only the very best malting barley growers. Maris Otter plays a key part in these beers as it has a depth of flavour and character that no other malt variety can get near. Coupled with its history, its unique ‘Britishness” and provenance it is no wonder that Maris Otter is the malt of choice for discerning brewers around the globe.
